After winning his first European Tour title at the 229th attempt in the 2019 Hassan Trophy Campillo added his second in 2020 at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, beating David Drysdale at the fifth play-off hole, and then the third this March in the Magical Kenya Open.
He played the first major of his life at Carnoustie in 2018 aged 32, nine years after turning professional. On that occasion Campillo qualified as one of the leading non-exempt players on the DP World Tour money list a month before the Championship and he has done the same this time.
Ranked as Spain’s No. 1 amateur for six years, Campillo won his national title in 2008 and was also named among America’s top college players as he won nine events at Indiana University.
In 2008 he represented Continental Europe against Britain and Ireland in the St Andrews Trophy and Spain at the World Amateur Team Championship, then on only his fifth start as a Tour member he tied for second at the Avantha Masters in India.
Five more runner-up finishes followed, at the 2013 Nelson Mandela Championship, 2017 Tshwane Championship, 2018 Maybank Championship in Malaysia and early in 2019 back-to-back at the Oman Open and Qatar Masters.
