As if winning the 2020 PGA Championship on his debut was not enough, Morikawa did the exact same thing at Royal St George's to create history in July 2021, coming from behind on both occasions with closing rounds of 64 and 66 respectively for two-stroke victories.

As if winning the 2020 PGA Championship on his debut was not enough, Morikawa did the exact same thing at Royal St George's to create history in July 2021, coming from behind on both occasions with closing rounds of 64 and 66 respectively for two-stroke victories.

Rounds of 67, 64, 68 and 66 gave Morikawa a 15-under aggregate of 265 in sunny Sandwich, a record for the venue that proved enough for a two-shot triumph. His final round was bogey-free and ensured he overhauled long-time leader Louis Oosthuizen and held off a Sunday charge from Jordan Spieth.

It made him the first player since Bobby Jones in 1926 to win two majors in eight or fewer starts – and also in there were finishes of joint eighth and at the US Open and tied fourth in his PGA title defence during a meteoric rise to second in the world before the age of 25.

He has also had three other PGA Tour wins, including a World Golf Championship, and a first Ryder Cup cap in September when he won three times alongside Johnson and halved his singes against Viktor Hovland.

To complete a dream season, he added the DP World Championship in Dubai in November and became the first American to top the DP World Tour money list. Winner of all his four games at the 2017 Walker Cup – a 19-7 victory for America - he also held the world amateur No.1 spot for three weeks in 2018 and won three of his three games at his first Presidents Cup in September.
